This ebook is outdoor writing at its best. It contains a mix of adventures, how-to instructions, science, humor, and unusual subjects that defy categorization. Throughout, it is a celebration of the outdoors--more than just "huntin' and fishin' and killin' things." Although most of the activities take place in the Midwestern United States, the instructions are applicable to much of the country, and the adventures can be appreciated by almost anyone anywhere.

"The Sporting Life" was an outdoor sports column written by the author for about five years, 1994-1999. The column ran in the Colchester Chronicle nearly every week, and in a few other Illinois weeklies with which he was associated. Only the best of these columns, some of which won awards, have been compiled into this volume.

The chapters are each organized in more-or-less chronological order, and the thread of a story often runs through them. Each topic, however, is brief and digestible enough to read during a spare moment.
